In the foothills of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon, there is a small town called Detroit. Residents in the town want to discourage associations with the large metropolis of Detroit, Michigan and so are considering renaming their mountain village. The new name that has been suggested is “Detroit Lake”, which would differentiate it and draw attention to the fact that the town is located near a lake. “I bought the old Detroit Lake Motel, and we turned it into a beautiful lodge,” Local businessman Doug DeGeorge said, “When people asked me what project I was working on, I’d tell them I was building a lodge in Detroit. When I said, ‘Detroit,’ everyone would scrunch up their noses and furrow their brows.” According to DeGeorge, people have a negative association with the ‘Motor City’ and that reputation is tarnishing the Oregon version’s tourism industry. renamer
